L'expression "Make love, not war" vient à l'origine de la chanson de John Lennon Mind Games :

Le slogan est repris par les manifestants pacifiques qui luttaient contre la guerre du Vietnam.
En effet, après les répressions subies suite à la manifestation pacifique en 1968 à San Francisco, les hippies ont l'idée d'un retour à la terre et d'un plus grand respect pour la planète, incluant des produits bio, l'utilisation d'énergie renouvelable et le recyclage. C'est alors le début de l'écologie et des premières craintes pour l'environnement et la planète.
Le combat écologique des hippies était dit pacifique, en grande partie parque leurs moyens de combat, leurs armes, étaient pacifiques. Avec eux, "arme pacifique" n'est en effet pas une contradiction et impliquent que ces armes ne soient pas conventionnelles : "sitting" devant la Maison Blanche, "flower power" où les armes des soldats étaient recouvertes de fleurs... C'est notamment pour ce genre d'actions que les hippies étaient aussi surnommés "flower children".
Enfin, l'ensemble de ces expressions (retour à la nature, nudisme, manifestations, vie communautaire, valeurs...) cherchaient à traduire une opposition à la guerre et à la violence en générale, sans pour autant que les revendications soient toujours plus élaborées ou véritablement théorisée.
